Martin Lewis warns get rid of common kitchen appliance that’s a ‘demon’

Martin Lewis is issuing a warning to anybody with a tumble dryer in their home. The BBC Sounds podcast host is urging households to ditch tumble dryers for dehumidifiers as the Cost of Living crisis continues up and down the country.

ITV star Martin said: “Many dehumidifiers have different wattages – the one I checked out was 200W. Once we know it’s 200W and we know a kilowatt is 1,000W, which is how electricity tends to be priced, we know this is a fifth of a kilowatt.

“And you pay roughly 34p per kilowatt per hour. A fifth is 7p, so you’re going to pay roughly 7p per hour to run a dehumidifier at 200W, assuming it uses full power the whole time.” f you have multiple loads of wet clothes, put similar items to dry together. Different materials require different settings. In general, high heat is used for jeans, towels, and other heavy items.

Medium heat can be used for synthetic materials like polyester; and low heat for delicate items. The tumble dryer is still a big energy guzzler and an hour of drying will cost you €1.30 (£1.12). Dry similar types of clothes together to make it more efficient time-wise.

This could allow you to do one 60-minute load and one 120-minute load. This would cost 25% less than two 120-minute loads. By managing your load correctly, your energy usage will be reduced but also your clothes should last longer.

The same goes for the dishwasher, by making sure it’s full you will save yourself from having to run the appliance more than once. The findings of Energia’s research revealed that a power shower was the least energy-efficient household item.

The power shower costs €3.33 (£2.86) to run for an hour almost double the price per hour to run your immersion (€1.67 or £1.43).
