Meghan Markle Netflix show releases one day before heartbreaking Kate Middleton milestone

The first glitzy trailer released for Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle series on Netflix gave fans a glimpse of what to expect.

Just one day after returning to Instagram, the Duchess of Sussex revealed her promo for her new show, With Love, Meghan, which will premiere on the streaming platform later this month. It showed the former actress, 43, inviting friends and famous guests to a California estate, where she shares cooking, gardening and hosting tips.

The new eight-part series is set to drop on January 15 – which is just one day before a heartbreaking milestone for her sister-in-law, Princess Kate. On 16 January last year, Kate was admitted to hospital for what she later called “major abdominal surgery” – and whilst the palace didn’t reveal many details of the Princess of Wales’ health issues, due to her right to medical privacy, it was the beginning of a difficult chapter for the future Queen.

With Kate out of the limelight for a considerable period – something unusual for her high-profile royal position – a myriad of conspiracy theories sprang up online about where the future Queen was, and exactly what was wrong with her. Speculation reached fever pitch when a photograph of Kate and her three children, George, 11, Charlotte, nine, and Louis, six was released for Mother’s Day – and appeared to have been digitally altered.

Some press agencies issued kill notices on the photograph, and Kate herself admitted that she had edited the image on Photoshop, apologising for “any confusion” caused by her attempts to do so. However, the altered image only added more fuel to the fire of the online rumours over the future Queen’s whereabouts.

Eventually, the wild theories were put to rest when Kate made an emotional video statement straight to the nation, explaining that after her surgery, post-operative tests had revealed that “cancer had been present” and that she had begun a course of preventative chemotherapy, which would keep her away from her royal duties for an extended period.

Since then, she has successfully completed her treatment and has been back in the spotlight and back to royal duty. Now a year on, this year on 15 January, Meghan will drop her hotly anticipated new lifestyle show for Netflix – part of the Duke and Duchess’s multi-year deal with the streaming giant.

With Love, Meghan, will see the Duchess return to her roots and looks set to be a massive hit amongst her die-hard fans, who have been following her journey long before she ever met Prince Harry. For years before her relationship with Harry began, Meghan ran a successful lifestyle blog called The Tig, which she eventually closed down when her relationship with her now-husband got more serious. The Tig had thousands of regular readers and covered everything from travel to wellness.

Meghan’s new show will focus on gardening, cooking, and crafting – amongst many other things. Famous friends “old and new” will join Meghan on her journey to show her audience her best “tips and tricks” to elevate the every day into the extraordinary. “Meghan reveals how even the most minute details can help add beauty to our lives and, most importantly, help bring people together. Whether it’s preparing take-home gifts for guests or adding a sprinkle of edible flowers to breakfast, it’s truly the thought that counts,” Netflix explains.

Filmed in Montecito, the eight-episode series will see critically acclaimed chefs and Meghan’s celebrity pals join her in her new project, which has been accompanied by her return to Instagram – after seven years of giving up a personal account. Meghan marked her return to social media with a sweet video that saw her write ‘2025’ in the sand on the beach and was said to have been filmed by Prince Harry himself.

The new series’s release will likely generate a myriad of headlines across the world and take some of the heat off Kate as she approaches an emotional anniversary that saw one of the most challenging periods of her life begin.

Prince Harry and Meghan have both been accused of “overshadowing” important moments for Kate on a number of occasions, with royal expert Jennie Bond pointing out that the couple’s shock announcement that they were quitting royal life in 2020 came one day before Kate’s birthday in 2020. In 2023, Bond noted Kate’s birthday also coincided with the publication of Harry’s bombshell memoir Spare, which lifted the lid on what life was like for the Duke in the Royal Family.
