Meghan Markle suffers heartbreaking loss admitting she's 'cried too many tears'

Meghan Markle has shared the devastating news of the death of a loved one.

The Duchess of Sussex, who recently returned to social media has suffered the ultimate heartache as she announced the death of her closest companion. Meghan, 43, had previously shared glimpses of her private life before she deactivated social media when she met her future husband, Prince Harry – and fans will have known about her bond for her beloved dog.

Guy, a beagle, had been at Meghan’s side throughout some of the happiest and darker times in her life. Having rescued him a decade ago, he saw her rise to International fame as Rachel Zane in the US legal drama, Suits, as well as just after her divorce from her first husband, Trevor Engleson. In her announcement, Prince Harry’s wife shared a string of pictures taken with Guy, as well as previously unseen images and video clips of her two children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilbet, three.

Her canine friend was also seen alongside the late Queen Elizabeth, when she arrived at Harry and Meghan’s wedding at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, for their wedding in 2018.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex has announced her beloved dog Guy has died

In a statement, the mum-of-two said: “In Memory of Guy. In 2015, I adopted a beagle from a dog rescue in Canada. He had been at a kill shelter in Kentucky and given a few days to live. I swooped him up….and fell in love. They referred to him as ‘the little guy’ because he was so small and frail, so I named him ‘Guy’. And he was the best guy any girl could have asked for.

“If you followed me on instagram back in the day, you saw a lot of him – and on The Tig too. He was with me at Suits, when I got engaged, (and then married), when I became a mom…. He was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort.

Prior to deactivating social media, Meghan had previously shared snaps of Guy with her online fans

“He endured a terrible accident shortly before I moved to the UK which had him undergoing surgeries for several months and unable to leave the clinic. Doctors said he would never walk again, but Dr Noel Fitzpatrick said he could do it. H and I would drive late at night, after hours, to see Guy as he recovered in Surrey for months on end.

“I will always be grateful to Noel and his team, the team at Queen West Animal Hospital in TO, our vets now, and my friends and community: Thank you for loving him so. Because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss. I think you may fall a little bit in love too.

“I have cried too many tears to count – the type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them, or pretend they’re not there. But they are. And that’s okay too. Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know. As ever, Meghan. #adoptdontshop”

Moving video clips shared the Duchess showed her eldest child, Prince Archie, walking Guy around what appeared to be a ranch, surrounded by horses as he lapped up his life in Montecito, where the Sussex family moved after stepping down as senior working members of The Royal Family in January 2020.

In a rare move, the Duchess also offered fans a glimpse of Princess Lilbet as they soaked in the Californian sun alongside Guy and their second rescue dog, Mamma Mia, who Meghan and Prince Harry rehomed from a Virginia breeding facility. Since stepping down from their life at Kesington Palace and Frogmore Cottage, the family have embraced their freedom on the West Coast and another clip showed King Charles’ son driving around in the family car.

However, it appeared that Archie had some concerns about their pooch who was seen attempting to peek into the front of the car. “He might fall!” the young Prince exclaimed, before Meghan responded: “He’s not going to fall, don’t you worry, Momma has him. Thank you for being such a good boy.”

Just last week, the Duchess announced she would be appearing in a new Netflix series – which also included Guy. In the official trailer for With Love, Meghan, the adorable dog was seen relaxing in his bed, with Meghan joking that he was “snoring.” Their bond was so close that Guy also appeared on the Sussexes official Christmas card for 2024.

Prince Harry has also previously opened up about his bond with Guy, admitting that the Sussex family dogs often help keep him “calm”. Speaking at the WellChild Awards in October, the Duke said: “I’ll tell you what, we all need a dog that keeps us calm. We have three in this house now, so we basically have five children.

“I’ve got a black Labrador called Pula, a rescue beagle called Guy and we’ve got another rescue beagle called Mia. Between the three of them, they drudged around chasing the squirrels every day, but they are also emotional support dogs when they’re behaving.” Guy also played a key part in the engagement of Meghan and Harry.

Speaking in their Netflix special, Harry revealed that he was sure Meghan would say “yes” to him, explaining: “It wasn’t that I knew she was going to say yes, but she’d already moved Guy over, so I had Guy as a hostage.” An image of the proposal saw Harry resting alongside Guy while on one knee, with the couple sharing a smile.

Shortly after announcing their engagement, the Duke told the BBC: “For 33 years, I’ve been barked at, and this one walks in, and absolutely nothing, just wagging tails.”
