Members of the public react as they are forced to listen to horrific 999 calls

Members of the public were left shocked and disgusted after listening to some of the abusive and racist phone calls received by ambulance service call handlers.

The North West Ambulance Service released a video on social media, which showed people being played a recording of appalling examples of abusive callers who staff had to deal with.

Even after being asked not to swear, one caller told the operator: “I want some f****** help from any of you, you w******. How dare you turn round to me and tell me that I can’t get f****** service?

“I can do whatever the f*** I want to do, you c***.”

In another call played, a man said: “I’m ringing because I want some help. But every c*** I ring, they keep hanging up because I swear, I’m f****** swearing.

“You’re a c***. Your a f****** ignorant little black c***. You don’t f****** listen to anyone, you stupid black n***** c***.

The recordings were released as part of the Work Without Fear campaign, which aims to highlight the abuse regularly suffered ambulance staff.

In a post on X, the ambulance service wrote: “No one should ever be spoken to like this, especially not emergency workers. We asked members of the public to listen to just some of the abusive calls we receive daily. Their reactions say it all: this behaviour is unacceptable. Our staff deserve to #WorkWithoutFear.”
