Merseyrail activates cold weather plan as Met Office warning causes travel disruption

There will be changes to Merseyrail services this morning

Merseyrail has activated its cold weather plan following another Met Office warning. A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is currently in place for Merseyside and will remain until 11am today, Thursday, January 9.

Forecasters said snow and icy patches may lead to some travel disruption. Merseyrail announced it had activated its “cold weather plan”, meaning there will be changes to come services.

The train operator said he first trains of the day will run without customers to ensure lines are clear and safe for use. The full list of cancelled and amended trains are below:

Northern lines

  • 06:06 Hunts Cross to Ormskirk will start at Liverpool Central.
  • 05:51 Ormskirk to Hunts Cross will start at Kirkdale.
  • 05:41 Headbolt Lane to Liverpool Central will start at Sandhills.
  • 05:36 Southport to Liverpool Central will start at Sandhills.

Wirral lines

  • 05:40 Hooton to Chester will start at Hamilton Square.
  • 05:56 Chester to Liverpool will start at Hooton.
  • 06:09 Ellesmere Port to Liverpool is cancelled.
  • 05:49 West Kirby to Liverpool will start at Birkenhead North.
  • 05:52 New Brighton to Liverpool will be cancelled.
  • 06:16 Moorfields to New Brighton will be cancelled.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Willington, said: “With low temperatures persisting across southwestern parts of England, sleet or snow will fall to low levels in parts of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset through Wednesday afternoon and evening. At locations above 150 m, 2-5 cm is possible, but over the higher ground of Dartmoor and Exmoor up to 10 cm could accumulate.

“More widely across southern England, a dusting of snow, up to a couple of centimetres, is possible as the system moves eastwards. The snow could cause some disruption to the transport network during this evening’s rush hour.”
