Met Office 18 hour winter weather warning issued for North Wales

A fresh winter weather warning has been issued for North Wales. The yellow alert for ice comes into force at 4pm today and lasts until 10am tomorrow (Friday). It covers all North Wales and most of the rest of Wales.

A Met Office forecast said: “Scattered wintry showers on Thursday evening will slowly fade overnight, leading to the risk of icy patches on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing. Isolated snow accumulations of 2-4 cm will be possible, more especially in Wales on hills above 150m elevation.”

People have been warned of potential travel disruption, some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths; and possible injuries from slips and falls, on icy surfaces, as the cold weather continues. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox.

It comes as dozens of schools were shut today due to the winter weather, with last night being reported as the coldest in Wales so far this year. A crash on the A55 in Gwynedd in icy conditions also sparked delays, as motorists were urged to take extra care. A yellow alert was also in force this morning for snow and ice for North Wales, which finished at 11am.

Here is the Met Office weather forecast for Wales:

Today:

A frosty and icy start with freezing fog patches stubbornly clearing. Wintry showers continuing in the north and west, mixed with sunnier spells in between. Feeling cold, but pleasant in the sunshine. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Tonight:
