Met Office forecast for New Year’s Day in London set to be wet and windy

A New Year’s Day walk might be out the window if London’s forecast is anything to go by. The Met Office is predicting the capital will be battered by rain and high winds for the majority of January 1.

A yellow weather warning has been issued across the UK, with winds set to reach up to 75mph. Londoners can expect gusts of 45-50mph in the early hours before speeds peak at 57-58mph between 9am and 3pm.

Households are urged to secure outdoor bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences to reduce the risk of injury or property damage. Things should calm down to 27mph by 9pm ahead of the weather warning’s removal at 6am on January 2.

Sadly, the wild winds will be paired with wet weather in the afternoon. There is a 60% chance of light rainfall from 9am-12pm and an 80-90 per cent chance of heavy rainfall from 12pm until 6pm.

The remainder of the evening will see cloudy skies and a 30 per cent chance of rain. If you decide to brave the outdoors then do remember to wrap up against the elements.

On the plus side, the day won’t be all that chilly for mid-winter. There will be a high of 11C and a low of 5C, although the wind will make this feel like 8C and 2C, respectively.

BBC Weather largely agrees with the Met Office forecast. It is predicting a high of 12C and peak winds of 52mph.

However, it is also thinks there will be some form of rain from 6am right through until 11pm.
