Met Office issues fresh weather warnings as temperatures continue to plummet

The Met Office has issued two new yellow weather warnings for ice covering the majority of Wales. While the warning issued is for ice the forecast also predicts some areas of higher ground could see snow.

Wales has seen several days of freezing temperatures that has brought snow, wintry showers, and slippery surface conditions. Almost every day this week the country has been under a warning for ice and many people have woken to find their cars completely frozen and pavements and roads slippery with ice. Now a new warning for ice Thursday evening and overnight shows the conditions on Friday are likely to be the same.

The first warning is in place from 4pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday morning and affects all of north Wales and mid Wales as well as some south Wales regions. The warning from the Met Office says: “Scattered wintry showers on Thursday evening will slowly fade overnight leading to the risk of icy patches on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing. Isolated snow accumulations of 2-4 cm will be possible more especially in Wales on hills above 150m elevation.”

A second warning is in place for Friday, January 10, from 3am until 11am. That warning covers southwest England and south Wales. The warning says: “Outbreaks of rain, sleet, and patchy snow spreading northeastwards on Friday morning, falling onto frozen ground, may lead to some icy patches on untreated surfaces for a time.

“Any accumulating snow will be largely reserved for hills, where a patchy 1-2 cm may accumulate above 150m elevation, and a small chance of 3-5 cm over Dartmoor. The extent of any precipitation across the north and east of the warning area, for example across Wales, is more uncertain and it may remain largely dry here.”

Some areas of Wales saw snow fall on Thursday morning while dozens of schools across the country were closed. Join our WhatsApp news community here for the latest breaking news. You will receive updates from us daily.
