Met Office issues new 19-hour weather warning as temperatures plummet

The Met Office has issued a fresh 19-hour weather warning as temperatures plummet. The yellow warning for ice comes into force at 5pm today [Tuesday, January 7] and remains in place until 12pm tomorrow.

It comes after weather maps showed that it could get as cold as -6C in some parts of Wales during this week. The warning covers Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, and Wrexham.

The Met Office said: “Afternoon and evening showers will slowly ease back to Irish Sea coasts, allowing ice to form on untreated surfaces inland. Showers will be a wintry mix, with 1-2cm accumulating on ground above about 200m before they begin to ease.”

The Met Office said the conditions could lead to some impacts on transport. People have been warned to expect some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, and some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Met Office maps predict that several parts of Wales will see the mercury tipping below zero degrees this week, with Thursday being the coldest day of the week. The Met Office recommends using pavements along main roads, as they are less likely to be slippery if you’re making a journey on foot.

They said anyone cycling should stick to main roads. They said in order to keep safe, people should consider leaving their homes at least five minutes earlier than normal, to prevent rushing and potentially slipping.
