Met Office issues new weather warning for Greater Manchester with ‘flooding expected’

A new weather warning has been issued for Greater Manchester with flooding expected in some parts of the North West of England.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain across the North West on Sunday (January 5). It comes as two amber alerts affecting Greater Manchester and much of Northern England warn of snow and ice starting from 6pm and 9pm tonight (January 4).

The new yellow alert issued this morning comes into effect at 6am on Sunday (January 5) and will be in place until 9pm. The Met Office has warned that heavy rain and thawing snow could lead to flooding in some places with travel disruption expect across the region.

Around 15 to 25 mm of rainfall is expected, combined with lying snow thawing may lead to some flooding, the Met Office says. The organisation has advised people in affected areas, which also includes Derbyshire, Cheshire, Wales and the West Midlands, to prepare.

The Met Office said: “Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance.

“It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

According to the Environment Agency, there is a ‘very low risk’ of flooding in Greater Manchester tomorrow (January 5). It follows devastating floods on New Year’s Day when a ‘major incident’ was declared with hundreds of people evacuated across the region.

Roads became submerged as car parks and shops were flooded. Homes and hotels were evacuated with residents left unable to return to their homes amid the major emergency responses in the worst-hit areas of Didsbury, Trafford, Stockport and Wigan.
