Met Office latest on how cold it will be in Greater Manchester today – after coldest night of winter so far

The deep freeze continues across the UK after the coldest night of winter so far. Temperatures plunged to -14.5C in northern Scotland, the Met Office confirmed.

Closer to Manchester, a figure of -7C was recorded at the Met Office’s Rostherne weather station, four miles south of Altrincham. Even chillier temperatures were expected on higher ground, in areas such as Ramsbottom and Saddleworth.

Freezing conditions continue across Greater Manchester today (January 10), with the cold snap set to last a while longer. A yellow weather warning for ice has been in force for western parts of the region until 10am today, with further Met Office warnings yet to be announced.

A UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) cold health alert has been extended until midday on Tuesday, January 14, meaning health services will likely be under increased demand – with more ill health and deaths expected as a result of the weather. The Met Office is forecast mist throughout much of today across Greater Manchester.

Eastern areas of the region – including Oldham and Rochdale – are in line for clearer skies and more sunshine, although most of Greater Manchester will see sunny spells in late morning. Highs of 3C are expected in Oldham and Rochdale, dropping to 1C in more southern areas, including Stockport, Trafford and Irlam in Salford.

Temperatures are expected to plummet again tonight, with colder figures expected in more southern areas. Temperatures could fall to -3C in Manchester. In Trafford, where the coldest temperatures are expected, lows of -5C are forecast in Sale and -6C in Altrincham.

Sunny, cold conditions are expected to continue on Saturday, with highs of 2C and lows of -1C forecast in Manchester. A change will follow on Sunday with highs of 4C and lows of 3C in the city, before warmer conditions next week.
