Met Office new yellow weather warning for 24 hours of heavy rain for Devon and Cornwall

The snow and ice warnings may be over – but the Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning across Devon and Cornwall – this time for 24 hours of heavy rainfall.

The warning is in place from 8.50am this morning (Sunday, January 5) until 9am tomorrow. It covers all of Devon and Cornwall as well as Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire, as well as other areas in the South West.

The Met Office is warning that heavy rainfall may lead to some transport disruption in places, with spray and flooding on the roads expected to increase journey times, as well as bus and train services likely to be affected, also making journey times longer.

The full Met Office warning reads: “Further spells of rain, heavy at times, through the course of Sunday and overnight into Monday morning, will bring the potential for some difficult travelling conditions and perhaps some localised surface water flooding.

“Through this period, a further 15-20mm of rain could fall quite widely, with perhaps 30mm in a few locations, this most likely in south-west England. Rain, perhaps with a little wet snow on its back edge, will clear to the east through Monday morning.”

It comes after Devon and Cornwall have already been soaked in rain since yesterday afternoon, with drenchings from around 4pm, and this continuing through the early hours of this morning.

The forecast predicts that the rain will clear in Devon and Cornwall by later this morning, before once again sweeping in from the south west over Cornwall at around 5.30pm, and continuing through the night.

The heaviest showers are expected in parts of southern Devon, including Tavistock and Totnes, early this evening, as well as all along the west coast, from Ilfracombe to Welcombe, at around midnight tonight.
