Met Office say ‘brace yourselves’ at temperatures in Greater Manchester to ‘feel as cold as -7C’

Temperatures in Greater Manchester are to ‘feel as cold as -7C’ over the coming days, with the Met Office urging people to ‘brace themselves’ for the chilly snap.

Wintry weather caused yet more disruption across the region again after further snowfall overnight on Tuesday (January 7). Two major roads were among those closed due to snow or flooding.

Another yellow Met Office weather warning for snow and ice was in force until 10am on Tuesday. Manchester Airport closed its runways for a number of hours once again due to snow as other parts of the region woke up to wintry conditions.

Oasis Academy Leesbrook, in Oldham, and Reddish Vale High School, in Stockport, were both fully closed. Flurries of sleet and snow fell across Greater Manchester throughout the day.

New weather forecasts from meteorologists at the Met Office have revealed that temperatures in some areas of Greater Manchester will feel as cold as -7C over the coming days.

On Tuesday night (January 7), the Met Office says temperatures in Ramsbottom could plummet to -5C. On Wednesday, despite sunnier and brisk conditions, it will be a chilly start in the morning, with -4C feeling as cold as -7C.

‘Feels like temperatures’ consider other factors, such as wind speed and humidity, the Met Office said.

In Saddleworth, temperatures will feel equally as cold. It will be another cold start on Wednesday morning following sub-zero temperatures overnight. On Wednesday evening, it will be around -3C, but will feel like -7C from around 10pm and into the early hours of Thursday morning (January 9).

Other areas in the UK will drop below -10 – with some areas even reaching -16 in rural northern areas and Scotland. The Met Office has issued a ‘brace yourselves’ warning.

In a post on X, the Met Office said: “Brace yourselves for some hard frosts this week. Some of our rural communities will be dropping below -10°C over the coming few nights.”

Met Office Chief Forecaster, Jason Kelly, added: “With cold weather persisting across the UK this week we have a number of severe weather warnings for wintry hazards.

“Snow showers will continue to fall over Scotland, Northern Ireland and into Northern Wales and northern England too. Where surface water and snow freeze overnight there is a risk of ice as temperatures widely dip below freezing. There will however be good spells of sunshine for those away from northern coasts, though it’ll still feel cold in the northerly breeze.”

Thursday and Friday will bring continued low temperatures with snow and ice warnings likely to be issued as confidence in the most likely impacted areas increases.

Fronts moving in from the southwest on Friday and Saturday bring the potential for more snow, with the possibility of further warnings.
