Met Office says snow to batter 14 counties in England during these hours

The Met Office has issued a fresh snow warning for swathes of the south of England. The Met Office has issued an update and says the “impact level reduced but the likelihood of at least some sleet and snow has increased. Parts of east Kent have been removed.”

The updated alert impacts East Sussex, Greater London, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Berkshire, Surrey, West Berkshire, West Sussex, and Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Wiltshire too. And Somerset in the south of England completes the list.

The Met Office adds: “Outbreaks of sleet and snow are likely to push in from the southwest during Wednesday, affecting some places especially during the afternoon and evening.

“Many places will probably see relatively little or no snow settling, (especially on tarmac), but there could be 1-2 cm locally. Upland areas could see more, perhaps 5-10 cm on Dartmoor and Exmoor. As precipitation clears eastwards and skies clear during Wednesday night, ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces.”

The alert lasts until 11.59pm on Wednesday, January 8. Looking further ahead, the Met Office has issued an update over what lies ahead from January 12 onwards, stating: “High pressure is likely to build from the south close-to or over the UK throughout this period, with generally settled conditions prevailing for many.

“Cloud amounts will be variable and often large, with a chance of some fog developing under clearer spells, which could be slow to clear. Frontal systems may affect some parts of the UK though, these more likely towards the northwest of the UK, bringing some rain and windier conditions here.

“Any systems are likely to be fairly weak though as they run into the high pressure. Temperatures are likely to be generally around or a little above average in the north and west, although southern and eastern parts may be colder at times, especially where overnight fog and frost is slow to clear.”
