Parts of Yorkshire will ‘feel like -10c’ as the Met Office warned of extreme cold temperatures and freezing fog.
The region was hit by heavy snow on Sunday and Monday followed by plummeting temperatures which has left hundreds of schools shut for days, roads closed and public transport hit as well as other council services. But the Met Office has warned there is no respite from the cold yet with temperatures set to fall even further.
Some of the worst hit areas – such as rural parts of North Yorkshire including Keld Lodge – will see temperatures at -6c for several hours overnight Thursday into Friday but this will feel more like -10c. In Huddersfield it will be -4c for several hours but feel like -8c. The lowest temperature in Leeds will be around midnight at -3c but will feel like -6c.
The Met Office forecast for Thursday said: “Very cold start, with the odd patch of freezing fog in prone valleys. Staying cold and largely sunny, although perhaps with an isolated coastal wintry shower. The odd spot inland staying below freezing. Breezy at times, particularly along the coast. Maximum temperature 3 °C.
