Lasting until 10am, a snow alert for Friday explains: ” Snow showers and ice leading to further travel disruption. Some roads and railways affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

“Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.” The forecast adds: “Sleet and snow showers will continue for the rest of Thursday, dying out by across northwest Scotland overnight but persisting across northeast Scotland until Friday morning.

“Further accumulations of 1-4 cm are expected to low levels away from coasts with 5-10 cm possible above 150 metres.” The Met Office adds: “Where any modest daytime thaw has occurred, icy stretches are likely on untreated surfaces.”

Places at risk include: Grampian, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Na h-Eileanan Siar, Highland, Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands. Today, dry, bright and cold for most, but some fog in the south may be slow to lift.

The BBC adds: “Tonight, very cold with clear skies to start for most but cloud building for the far west later bringing spells of rain. Elsewhere, mist and fog in places, this rather dense in the south. Tomorrow, areas of low cloud mist and fog will be slow to clear, if at all, in southern areas. Wintry sunshine expected in the north-east, but cloudier with a few spots of light rain in western areas.

“Sunday will be milder with mainly cloudy skies to start. Breezy in the west with some patchy light rain in the north. Turning brighter in the south later. Monday will be cloudy and windy in the north and west with rain in the north-west.

“Drier and brighter further south and east. A largely breezy and cloudy day for most on Tuesday, with a few spells of light rain in the north.”
