Met Police warning over ‘increase of people illegally forcing’ their way into New Year’s Eve fireworks display

Anyone who forces their way into ticketed New Year’s Eve events will be arrested, the Met Police has warned. The force says it has seen an increase in attempts in recent times, leading to a risk to public safety.

Officers are now urging anyone without a ticket to avoid the centre of London once the Mayor of London’s annual fireworks display kicks off tomorrow evening. Commander Nick John, who is leading the New Year’s Eve policing operation, said: “London is expected to be exceptionally busy, particularly in the West End and surrounding areas.

“Please plan your evening ahead of time, including your journey home. Where possible, we would encourage people to attend organised events.

“Anyone planning to come into the centre of London should be aware that the main fireworks display on the Embankment is a fully ticketed event and is sold out.

“Regrettably in recent years we have seen an increase in incidents where a minority have tried to illegally force entry into ticketed events, putting everyone’s safety at risk. Anyone trying to gain entry in this way tomorrow could be arrested and could face prosecution.

Police will be working in partnership with stewarding staff to ensure crowds are kept under control as they ring in 2025. They’ll also be offering specialist support at Waterloo station alongside charity Safer Spaces where incidents of abuse and sexual violence can be reported.

Crowds are also being asked to stay away from Primrose Hill. Each year, the park attracts thousands of people hoping to catch a glimpse of the capital’s biggest display.

However, the Camden attraction is not an official viewing spot and it is technically unlawful to hold large gatherings there. Police and stewards will be on patrol and anyone caught setting off fireworks or lanterns will face enforcement action.

People should instead head to Cannon Street, Alexandra Palace, Hampstead Heath or Parliament Hill. Southwark, Lambeth and Vauxhall Bridges also offer a great view.

The City Bridge Foundation has asked that people avoid Tower Bridge and London Bridge as you can’t see anything from them and they are not set up for a mass of people.

When does Mayor of London’s fireworks display start?

Those with tickets to London’s biggest display can head to their designated viewing area from 8pm when gates open. The fireworks will then take place at midnight and the event will be over by 12.30am.

You can see a full map of viewing areas and arrival routes here.

Are there any changes to public transport?

Transport for London (TfL) will be running buses, Underground and Overground on a reduced Saturday service. Some stations near the fireworks event and in other busy areas of London may be exit or interchange only, or have queues.

Some buses will also be running on diversion from early afternoon.

Those travelling on New Year’s Eve can get live updates for services via the TfL website here.
