Midlands bus lanes which snare most drivers as 9,000 caught at one location

The bus lanes which catch out most drivers in West Midlands towns and cities have been named. Thousands of motorists found themselves in trouble after veering into bus lanes across the Black Country in 2024.

Some may have got confused by road layouts or signage and drifted inadvertently into these no-car zones, while others may have taken the risk and tried to beat the traffic. Data shows motorists are unlikely to get away with cutting into bus lanes, which are monitored by cameras.

They brought in hundreds of thousands of pounds into council coffers in fines last year. But some bus lanes catch many more drivers than others.

The most prolific in the Black Country include Bridge Street, Walsall; New Street, West Bromwich; and Victoria Square (Pipers Row), Wolverhampton. All three hotspot locations have attracted controversy in the past over numbers of fines.

There were nearly 9,000 at Bridge Street, Walsall, last year, up to October, which is close to 1,000 every month. That location alone brought in £207,000 for Walsall Council.

New Street, West Bromwich, was another big earner at £212,000. The data was released by councils following freedom of information requests by BirminghamLive. It comes after we revealed Birmingham city centre’s most notorious bus lanes had continued to catch tens of thousands of motorists in 2024.
