Millwall new boy cites Alex Neil’s work at developing centre-backs as a lure after making switch

New Millwall centre-back Tristan Crama has talked about Alex Neil’s history of developing players in his position as one of the factors in joining from Brentford.

The defender has signed a long-term deal with the Championship side and is available for tomorrow’s home game against Hull City.

Asked about the attraction of working with new Lions head coach Alex Neil, Crama told Millwall TV: “I can name names – he had a lot of young centre-backs he developed – Sepp van den Berg, who is at Brentford, Ben Godfrey and Ben Davies. As a young centre-back you need to have someone help you develop.

“That’s what the gaffer can give me and the club watched me more than 20 times – it means a lot for me. It means they are really interested in me.

“It has been a long journey for me since I joined Brentford. I had two good loans and now needed to secure a long-term project. That is what Millwall offered to me. I spoke to the gaffer and he made me feel very comfortable.

“When I first joined Brentford I couldn’t speak any English words – apart from things like ‘hello’. It was during Covid as well. I came in at 18 and couldn’t see my family for most of the year. It hasn’t been easy. But year after year I have taken it step by step.

“I can’t wait to play. I would prefer to be in League One and playing every week than in the Premier League and on the bench every week. Being on the pitch is the best feeling.”
