Monty Don returned to our screens with his much anticipated new series British Gardens – and sparked the same demand from viewers as they spotted an issue with the show. The horticulturist favourite is travelling around the UK to learn what gardens can reveal about the country’s people, climate and history in the new BBC Two series, airing on Friday nights.
Monty, best known for his long-running job on Gardeners’ World, was met with the same criticism from some viewers as he shared details of the second episode. He wrote: “The second programme of my new ‘British Gardens’ series is coming up this Friday on BBC2. It takes me across the North of England with a quick visit to Northern Ireland. I began at the stupendous Lowther Castle, near Penrith in the Lake District.”
While viewers loved the show, they said it was ‘very rushed’ as they begged producers to allow Monty to spend more time in the beautiful gardens features. One wrote: “Too much squashed into one programe sadly , too rushed.”

A second agreed: “Hopefully a little slower than ep1, spending more time in fewer gardens. Or, just make the series longer.”
“Agree, the gardens seemed very rushed and unusually superficial. Beautiful filming though,” a third echoed, while a fourth added: “A beautiful show. More time spent and more episodes please.”
Others are absolutely loving the BBC show, with many already having ploughed through all the episodes, which are available to watch on BBC iPlayer. One fan wrote: “Already binged the entire series,” while a second commented: “Episode 1 was fantastic! We have an ever-growing bucket list of places to visit now!”
“Watched almost all of the series already. Just glorious!,” another said. A fourth wrote: “Have binged the lot. Fantastic series!”
And another viewer added: “The first episode was wonderful!”
The second episode of Monty Don’s British Gardens will air on BBC Two at 8pm on Friday, January 15. Viewers can catch up and watch more of the series on BBC iPlayer, where all of the episodes have been uploaded.
