A motorist has been reported for driving ‘Ace Ventura style’ – by hanging their head out the window with a windscreen coated in snow.
A photograph posted by Merseyside Police’s Road Policing Unit on X on Thursday (January 9) shows a black Mercedes car with its windscreen completely obscured by the white stuff. According to the force, the vehicle’s driver was hanging out of the window ‘Ace Ventura style’ while in control of the vehicle.
The police force wrote: “Just when you think you have seen it all! This vehicle was being driven exactly as you see it in the picture with the driver hanging out of the window Ace Ventura style.
“We didn’t think we needed to say it, but that is simply not acceptable and the driver has been reported.”
The reference to Ace Ventura comes from the 1994 film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, where title character Jim Carrey goes on a high speed chase with his head out of the window due to his smashed windscreen. While there is no specific law against driving with snow on your windscreen, the Road Traffic Act 1988 says that drivers must have “a full view of the road and traffic ahead,” while the Highway Code says drivers must clear all snow and ice from their windows.
Police dog Mo leaning out of the window
Merseyside Police dog Mo decided to re-enact the scene later, with his head sticking out from a car with a snow-covered windscreen.
In an update, the force wrote: “Can you believe it! We have just been in the yard and caught police dog Mo doing exactly the same thing as he gets the cars ready for patrol. No extra treats tonight and an educational talking to from his handler!”
