Police have cordoned off multiple streets in Liverpool city centre following an incident this evening. Merseyside Police were called to Whitechapel at around 6.40pm on Monday, December 30, following reports “a male had been assaulted”.

A cordon was put in place on Whitechapel outside the Metquarter, with Tesco Express and the Everyman Cinema also within the cordon. The entrance to the Cavern Quarter on Stanley Street was also sealed off, along with a section of Button Street, Williamson Street and Leigh Street.

The cordons have since been reduced in size but a large cordon remains on Whitechapel this evening. A police helicopter can be seen circling over the city centre and what appear to be bloodied tissues and a coat can be seen on the floor.

People were out at bars and restaurants in the city centre when they came across the police scene this evening. Photos show police vans surrounding the area and officers carrying out their investigations.

The ECHO is awaiting for further details on the incident and you can find out latest updates in our live blog here.
