Murder probe after woman found dead at West Country home

Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman was found dead at a property this afternoon, Friday, January 17. Emergency services were called to a property near Sidmouth, Devon, after reports of a concern for the welfare of a woman.

Around 1.15pm, police and paramedics attended the property at Lark Rise, Newton Poppleford and a 70-year-old woman was declared deceased at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to locate her next of kin.

A police cordon is in place and officers are investigating the incident. A 67-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody at the time of reporting.

It is believed the man and woman were known to each other. Police are not searching for anyone else in relation to the woman’s death.

Detective Inspector Paula Trevett said: “Officers are carrying out enquiries into this very sad case to establish what happened and a cordon have been set up to allow for a thorough investigation of the scene. It is believed that the man and the woman were known to each other.

“I would like to reassure the community that this is being treated as an isolated incident and at this time we are not seeking anyone else in connection to the death. Members of the public will see an increased police presence in the area, and we would encourage anyone, if they have any concerns, to contact officers from the local neighbourhood policing team.”
