Nationwide, Lloyds, NatWest and Santander customers can get £335 in their bank accounts in January

UK households have been told how they can make hundreds of pounds extra in January by making one simple change. Many people like to start off the new year by taking part in ‘dry January’ – cutting out booze for the month.

And there are big savings to be made for regular drinkers by staying off alcohol for the whole of January. Experts at DrinkAware have crunched the numbers and revealed there are hundreds of pounds to be saved.

Money normally spent on drinking could instead boost bank accounts and be spent on other things or put towards savings. Wine drinkers who have 10 glasses a week can pocket a whopping £335, while someone drinking 10 pints of lager a week could save around £245 in a month.

Cutting out six cocktails could save £192 a month, while Guinness fans who enjoy 6-8 pints a week can quickly add up to £173. While many of us enjoy a few drinks to unwind from the working week, cutting it out for a period can have substantial financial as well as health benefits.

Maxine McCreadie, from UK Debt Expert, said: “When the winter season arrives, it’s common to enjoy a drink here and there, but taking a break whether for a month or even longer can only benefit your health and bank account. People are continuing to feel the pinch of the cost of living, and reducing expenditure on drinks could significantly support your other financial priorities, helping to get back on track financially.

“This calculator may help people realise just how much they are spending weekly on drinks without realising it, and support better budgeting for the future. Plus, being financially aware of your drinking habits and costs may prove beneficial long term.”
