The money will be handed out by local councils. It will be up to authorities to decide who is eligible for the support. This will mostly be low-income households struggling to pay their bills and manage day to day.
People can currently apply to their council for grants from the Household Support Fund (HSF). The latest winter phase will finish at the end of March but the Government has confirmed the HSF will then continue heading into spring and summer.

That means payments will continue to be available through the rest of 2025 and into 2026. It’s likely applicants will only be accepted for payments once in a 12-month period, however, to ensure as many families are supported as possible.
People will have to show they are struggling to pay for essentials like food, energy and water. Applicants do not have to be claiming benefits.
Councils are paying out different amounts. In Birmingham, residents can apply for grants worth £200. Full details can be found on the Household Support Fund section of your local council’s website.
The Government said: “You may be able to get help with essential costs from your local council. This is sometimes known as ‘the Household Support Fund’. This could help if you’re struggling to afford things like: energy and water bills, food, essential items.
“Your council may also offer food vouchers to families during the school holidays. Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council.”
