New map shows every fatal stabbing, shooting, and assault MyLondon reported on in 2024

A new map shows every killing MyLondon reported on in 2024. With official data on the number of people murdered in London in 2024 yet to be released, the map is by no means exhaustive, but it does give a sense of the geographic spread of violence around the capital over the last 12 months.

Our count of deadly incidents that sparked a homicide investigation was 12 shootings, 51 stabbings, and 25 assaults. While those figures are not final, and may not include other types of deaths, it appears, from the incidents we reported on, violent crime (especially stabbings) was concentrated north of the River Thames, with most incidents happening in North and East London.

In comparison to 2023, Action on Armed Violence reports that there were a total of 103 homicides in the capital; 67 were stabbed, eight were shot, and 28 were killed either with no weapon, other means, or unknown (we grouped these attacks as assaults). From our own data, it appears the number of shootings has increased, stabbings have gone down, and other fatal attacks slightly down. Below you can find our map to see where these incident occurred, as well as links to our stories.

On the issue of violence in the capital, Action on Armed Violence said: “Reducing violence in London requires a joint effort from the police, social services, schools, and community organizations. Focusing on the specific needs of the most affected areas and investing in young people can help lower these crime rates.”

Areas with multiple incidents include the streets between Haggerston and Bethnal Green in East London, the Ladbroke Grove area of West London, and around Finsbury Park in North London. There were multiple incidents in parks, at railway and Tube stations, and near entertainment venues.

Research by the Mayor of London’s Violence Reduction Unit found violence is ‘highly geographically concentrated’ and that ‘income deprivation is the strongest predictor of high violence in a specific neighbourhood’.

Published in 2020, the report blamed the 2008 recession and austerity measures for the increased vulnerability of London’s neighbourhoods to violent crime, specifically due to labour market conditions compounded by changes in the drug market.

The VRU’s ‘My Ends’ project has been running since 2021, pumping £14.5million into eight areas with targeted interventions. Ahead of his re-election last year, the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, committed to expanding the project to 11 areas across London, with millions more in funding. The VRU claims the programme has supported more than 50,000 young people and community members.
