New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day opening times for Sainsbury’s, M&S and special London Lidl hours

Supermarkets and other big name chain stores are operating on reduced hours over New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. So whether you’re going out or staying in to bring in the start of 2025, there is a strong chance you’ll need to pop to your local Tesco, Sainsbury’s or B&M for supplies.

Opening times do vary across the country, but to help give you a general idea of what to expect, we’ve searched stores online to see when they’ll be open on New Year’s Eve and then New Year’s Day. To get the most accurate times for your local store, make sure you use the relevant store finder tool and enter your postcode to find your nearest shop.

Aldi

Aldi stores will open from 8am until 6pm on New Year’s Eve, then they will stay closed on New Year’s Day. Its normal hours will resume on Friday, January 2.

Asda

Larger Asda stores will open at either 6am or 7am, unless it is a 24-hour branch, and then close at 7pm, on New Year’s Eve. The majority of stores we checked were then scheduled to open from 9am until 6pm on New Year’s Day. Its smaller Asda Express stores have varying opening hours, with some open for 24 hours, and others open from 7am until either 7pm until 10pm.

B&M

B&M will remain open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with reduced hours. The majority of stores will be open until 6pm on New Year’s Eve, with some staying open until 7pm. Opening hours for most stores on New Year’s Day will be 8am to 6pm.

Home Bargains

Home Bargains still will be open until 5pm on New Year’s Eve with all stores shut on New Year’s Day.

Lidl

If you’re a Lidl shopper, stores will open from 8am until 6pm on New Year’s Eve, or until 7pm for branches inside the M25. Then on New Year’s Day, the majority of Lidl stores will be closed, apart from ones inside the M25 which will be open from 10am until 6pm.

Marks and Spencer

There are a variety of different opening hours for Marks and Spencer stores. For the ones we checked today, some are open from 8am until 7pm, or from 9am until 5pm on New Year’s Eve, then all its stores will be shut on New Year’s Day.

Morrisons

The majority of Morrisons supermarkets will open from 7am until 7pm on New Year’s Eve and then from 9am until 6pm on New Year’s Day. Its smaller Morrisons Daily stores will open from 7am until 10pm on both days.

Sainsbury’s

The larger Sainsbury’s stores that we checked online today are set to open from 7am until 7pm on New Year’s Eve, then from 8am to 8pm on New Year’s Day. For its smaller Sainsbury’s Local stores, most of them will open from either 6.30am or 7am until 9pm on New Year’s Eve, then from 9am until 9pm on New Year’s Day.

Tesco

When we checked online today, the majority of larger Tesco supermarkets will open at either 5am or 6am and then they’ll close at 7pm on New Year’s Eve. The stores we checked today were then scheduled to open from 9am until 6pm on New Year’s Day. Most of the Tesco Express branches we looked at are open from 6am to 10pm on New Year’s Eve and then 8am to 10pm on New Year’s Day.

Waitrose

The majority of Waitrose supermarkets will open until67pm on New Year’s Eve. Most stores will be closed on New Year’s Day, with a small number remaining open, with some open for Deliveroo and Uber Eats orders. All Shell and Welcome Break stores will trade as usual.
