NHS doctor says one fruit ‘gets rid of’ bloating, cramps and constipation

A doctor says a natural solution for anyone who struggles with bloating and constipation could be a specific type of fruit. Dr Karan Rajan suggests that a twice-daily dose of one exotic fruit might benefit those battling common and uncomfortable bowel symptoms.

In a recent TikTok clip, a woman suggests that a study based on kiwis proves the green fruit is highly effective for those with digestive issues. She states that consuming two kiwis each day, without the fuzzy brown skin, “can help to relieve chronic constipation”.

NHS surgeon Dr Karan Rajan has weighed in on this claim, stating that kiwis do indeed help your gut. He said: “If you’re constipated and bloated, then this evidence-backed kiwi regime could be salvation for your bowels. A pivotal study analysed kiwi’s effects on gastrointestinal [GI] symptoms in constipated individuals.”

Detailing the research, Dr Rajan explained how the experiment involved participants eating two kiwis a day for a month. This led to an increase in their weekly bowel movements from two or three times to five to seven times, reports the Mirror. The individuals experienced “less bloating and abdominal pain”.

Kiwis are distinct from other typical bowel-movers like prunes and other fibre-rich foods. The fruit boasts both soluble and insoluble fibre, which softens and adds bulk to stool, facilitating a “softer exit,” the doctor explained.

The green-coloured fruit contains an enzyme called actinidin, which aids in maintaining regular bowel movements, the doctor aded. Constipation is a common medical condition characterised by changes in bowel habits, such as infrequent movements or difficulty passing stools.

It can affect individuals of all ages and may be caused by various factors, sometimes without clear cause. Making simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can help treat constipation.
