Nurse stabbed at Royal Oldham Hospital pictured as suspect appears in court

This is the NHS nurse who was allegedly stabbed with a pair of scissors at Royal Oldham Hospital. Police were called out to the hospital at 11.30pm on Saturday (January 11) following reports of a stabbing at the Acute Medical Unit.

The nurse, aged in her 50s, has been named as Achamma Cherian. She has now been pictured for the first time following the attack.

Roman Haque has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article, namely a pair of scissors. The 37-year-old, of Yasmin Gardens, Oldham, appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court yesterday morning (Tuesday).

Dressed in a grey tracksuit top and bottoms, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. Represented by Greg Kemp, he was not asked to enter a plea to the charges.

Following the brief hearing, before District Judge Jane Hamilton, the case was sent to Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court. Haque was remanded into custody ahead of his scheduled appearance there on Tuesday, February 18.

In a statement confirming the charges on Monday, Detective Superintendent Matt Walker from GMP Oldham said: “Our thoughts are with the nurse as she continues to receive treatment in hospital for her injuries, and our priority remains supporting her, her family, and her colleagues at this difficult time. We continue to work closely with our NHS colleagues to support anyone who has been affected by this incident.”
