The Inn on The Green, a well-known seafront pub in Paignton, is under threat of being demolished to make way for a car park, causing unrest amongst DevonLive readers. The Fragrance Group, which is behind the construction of new hotels in the area, has suggested replacing the historic pub with parking facilities.
Torbay MP Steve Darling has voiced his concerns about the potential loss of this iconic establishment, questioning if a car park is the best use of the space. There’s growing anger in Paignton over plans to knock down the ‘iconic’ seafront pub and replace it with a car park.
Critics argue that the landmark Inn on The Green is a historic feature of the seafront, and Torbay MP Steve Darling believes it would be regrettable to see it levelled. The closure of the Inn on The Green in October and the subsequent plan for a car park have split opinions among residents.
Reader Rickyda2002, says: “A car park on the seafront how beautiful and crazy is that.”
M1785 comments: “Because people that own these buildings, there needs to be a change. Keep it looking half decent because what happens is that it attracts anti-social behaviour.”
Sean Fenegan reveals: “The hotels bought it to demolish to make parking for them. Funnily enough the planning for this was all kept quiet from the public and went through extremely quickly.”
Gail Wilkinson suggests: “Nightclub! needed in this town!”
Natalie Collins adds: “You can’t really complain its going when very few actually visited it. Seafront parking would be very beneficial especially given council plans to remove parking by the pier.”
Nicky Ralls expressed their thoughts, saying: “Probably more revenue from parking than a pub.”
Aston Hartless was vehement in his opposition, stating: “It’s absolutely disgusting if the council let this happen the town will fight back this can not go ahead this needs to be a pub or a club and it’s in a prime location.”
Wesley Donoghue asks: “Thought it was a listed building? ” Charlie Masters supported the idea, commenting: “Great idea, we need more parking.”
Pete Godfrey voiced disappointment, and says: “Another car park and nowhere to go this is a joke let’s drag Paignton down a bit more.”
