Patience filming locations across ‘magical’ York as new Channel 4 crime drama airs

New Yorkshire crime drama Patience is set to be aired on Channel 4, but where was the new series filmed?

The crime drama introduces us to Patience Evans (Ella Maisy Purvis), an autistic woman with a clerical job in police records at the police force. Patience craves routine and order, relishing the solitude and structure her job provides but she yearns for more

Patience’s talents and potential are recognised by Detective Bea Metcalf (Laura Fraser) and she recruits her for a new role to help investigate serious crimes across York.

The six-part Channel 4 drama has been said to offer a “unique and authentic perspective on neurodiversity” and all neurodivergent characters within the show are played by neurodiverse actors.

Its first episode will be broadcast at 9pm on Wednesday (January 8) on Channel 4, with the second episode airing on Thursday (January 9) at 9pm.

With York as its setting, many viewers, tourists and local residents will be wondering where Patience was filmed.

The crime drama was filmed across York and Belgium in 2024, with filming first taking place in Antwerp . According to the cast, the majority of the filming took place in Belgium.

Ella Maisy Purvis was thrilled to work across Antwerp and loved learning more about the local culture. She said: “Antwerp, where most of the filming took place, was fantastic. I think about the food there almost daily.

“On set they had this food truck that stayed all day, filled with so many snacks and drinks and the most amazing breakfast spread I’ve ever seen. It was all so incredibly European, with the freshest bread every morning – it was heavenly.

“I also really liked working with the crew who were all local. They were too lovely for words, and I learnt so much about the city and its culture through them. I’ve made lifelong connections so with many of them.”

Filming moved to York in April 2024 and crews picked various locations across the city. The series creators say the cases the police solve with the help of Patience are baffling and unusual and set in extraordinary places around York.

Laura Fraser and another character shot scenes near the River Ouse while lead actress Ella Maisy Purvis appeared at York City Rowing Club. Other filming locations in the city include Monk Bar and Precentor’s Court opposite York Minster

On another day of shooting, crews filmed at Monkgate Yard, Stonegate and Blake Street as well as Victorian Claremont Terrace, off Gillygate.

Crews were also spotted at Station Rise which was close between its junctions with Tanner Row and Station Road near The Grand.

When asked about filming in York, Ella called the city “magical”. She continued: “Walking through The Shambles at around 3 or 4 o’clock felt like you were in some sort of Victorian film.

“I couldn’t get over how much the whole place felt like a movie set, yet this was just where people actually lived.

“I have to admit, I’m quite prone to falling down and I’m a little clumsy – so trying to tackle those cobbles in a pair of loafers was a nightmare! But so worth it for that scenery.”
