Pensioners who lost Winter Fuel Payment can get £200 cost of living payments

Low-income pensioners who have had their Winter Fuel Payments removed this year may be able to get special cost of living payments instead. Around two million pensioners are estimated to have lost their Winter Fuel Payments, worth up to £300, despite being on low incomes following the Government’s controversial decision to means-test the benefit.

With Britain currently experiencing freezing cold temperatures, these people may be worried about keeping their homes warm. But they may be eligible for cost of living support payments from their local councils.

Authorities are paying out cash grants to residents suffering financial hardship and struggling to pay for things like food and energy. Anyone struggling to heat their home or worried about the cost is encouraged to apply for support.

Full details of how to apply can be found on the Household Support Fund section of your council’s website. Local authorities are paying out different amounts. For example, Birmingham City Council is giving £200 grants to those who qualify.

Applicants don’t have to be on benefits if they can show they are struggling to pay for essentials. The money comes from the Household Support Fund, made up of millions of pounds given to councils by the Government.

It said: “You may be able to get help with essential costs from your local council. This is sometimes known as the Household Support Fund. This could help if you’re struggling to afford things like: energy and water bills, food, essential items.

“Your council may also offer food vouchers to families during the school holidays. Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council. Councils decide how to run their schemes.”
