People realising they can get London Underground themed furniture – but are shocked by the price

People are realising they can get Tube themed furniture amongst other London Underground memorabilia to style out their home – but the cost of some items have left them shocked. London Transport Museum’s shop offers a range of homeware from Tube line hats for £15 to sofas costing more than £2,000.

The made-to-order pieces feature the same material used on Tube seats and can come as an armchair, 2/3 seater sofa or a compact sofa as well as cushions and other wearable merchandise. Th cushions are ‘cut from the same rolls of fabric used to upholster London’s transport vehicles’.

While many have known about the gifts and trinkets available from the museum some weren’t aware of the extent of what’s on offer.

In a Reddit thread, people were excited to see what was on offer and others shared what they’ve already bought. One Redditor said: “I have a few of the cushions from different lines, they’re amazing and surprisingly subtle as far as tube-themed decor goes.”

Another added: “To be fair it may last you aaaages, decades even (the moquette is very tough since it has to last hundreds of thousands of butts sitting on them over its lifespan).”

As Redditors looked on the Transport Museum Shop, they were shocked by the prices. “I really wanted to buy a cushion in Tube line fabric, but it was £40!, one said. “I guess the fabric is probably pretty expensive as it’s hard wearing. But it was too much for me.” “I’d consider getting that cushion – BUT NOT AT £200!?!” another added.

While some where surprised at the price, London Transport Museum enterprise director, Sarah Fellingham-Adkin, said “every purchase helps make a difference”.

“London Transport Museum’s shop furniture range offers the chance to own a unique bespoke statement piece that embodies London and its transport history”, she added. “Each customised piece is handmade and upholstered in the UK and is made with the same authentic moquette material as seen on the TfL network.

“Besides sofas and armchairs, there are also moquette cushions available to purchase from £35, and smaller furniture items such as footstools starting at £220. Every purchase helps make a difference by supporting the Museum’s work as an education and heritage charity.”
