People who had Winter Fuel Payments taken away can get £200 cost of living payments

Around two million pensioners on low incomes who had their Winter Fuel Payments taken away have been told they may be able to claim cost of living cash instead. The winter support payment has been made means-tested by the Government for 2024/25, meaning millions have not received it like in previous years.

It has left these people with a hole of up to £300 in their finances. Many are comfortable enough to cope without it but an estimated two million are on low incomes and struggling to get by

Anyone who has been affected and is worried about their finances is being encouraged to apply to their local council for special cost of living payments. Local authorities are handing out Government cash designed to help those most in need.

Households struggling to pay for essentials like food, water and energy can apply for cash grants. Birmingham City Council is issuing £200 payments, while the amount differs in other areas. Full details can be found on the ‘Household Support Fund’ section of your local council’s website.

It means there could be a lifeline for low-income pensioners who have had their Winter Fuel Payments taken away. The Government says: “You may be able to get help with essential costs from your local council. This is sometimes known as the Household Support Fund. This could help if you’re struggling to afford things like: energy and water bills; food; essential items.

“Your council may also offer food vouchers to families during the school holidays. Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council.”
