Person falls from height in the Avon Gorge area

A person has fallen from a height in Bristol, prompting a large emergency service response in the city today, Monday, December 30. Police were called to the Avon Gorge area just before 11am today after the incident was reported.

Multiple witnesses have said that police, ambulance and fire crews rushed to the scene. They also added that the Coastguard and police helicopter were also in the area.

Clifton Suspension Bridge was closed and remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians at the time of reporting. Follow our live blog here for the latest updates.

A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police said: “We received a report shortly before 11am today (30 December) that a person had fallen from a height in the Avon Gorge area. Officers attended alongside other emergency services and remain at the scene.”

One witness said: “There were six ambulances and then four fire trucks including a rope division van”. Anther person said: “The Suspension Bridge has been closed for cars and pedestrians. There seems to be quite a major police operation going on. A helicopter is hovering the bridge right now.”

Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reports the Suspension Bridge is closed in both directions. It said: “Clifton Suspension Bridge in both directions closed, delays due to police incident from B3129 / Sion Hill / Sion Place to B3129 / North Road / Burwalls Road.”
