Plans for 700 new homes on a ‘brownfield’ site in Huddersfield have taken a step forward.
Housing provider Vistry Group and developer Miller Homes have jointly bought a site off Blackmoorfoot Road and Felks Street at Crosland Moor. The site has outline planning permission for more than 700 new homes and has been used in the past as a quarry and fireworks factory base.
Vistry is aiming to build 469 ‘mixed-tenure’ homes, with half for the open market and half in ‘affordable tenures’ such as shared ownership and homes for rent.
Miller Homes is aiming to build 231 homes for the private market. The proposed new development will also include a new care home and a local convenience store, according to the developers.

Vistry and Miller Homes say they will provide a “wide range of house styles and sizes, from one to five bedrooms, helping to provide a mix of housing choices.”
A start date on the scheme has yet to be announced.
The site is located on a former industrial area and some agricultural land. Under the new plans, it will feature ‘green corridors’, a central park and a variety of outdoor play areas. A quarter of the land will be dedicated to being green space.
The developer say that significant financial contributions will be made to help improve local services and facilities, with £1.3m invested into local schools and £900,000 towards local highways and sustainable transport improvements.
Andrew Poyner, managing director of Vistry West Yorkshire, said: “This major site will deliver many hundreds of new, high quality, mixed-tenure homes, helping to support the council’s local housing needs and breathing new life into this vacant, brownfield site.
“Working together with Miller Homes we can provide greater housing choices for local people, creating a new neighbourhood featuring a range of green spaces and areas of outdoor play.”
Justin Tranmere, regional operations director of Miller Homes Yorkshire, said: “Miller Homes is delighted to be partnering with Vistry Group to deliver new homes for Huddersfield through the purchase of this significant site.
“We look forward to providing high-quality, sustainable homes, and investing in the neighbourhood to ensure that the community we help build, and the people living in it, can grow and prosper.”
The site has previously been allocated as a housing site by Kirklees Council.
In 2023 the housing scheme was said to be on hold as the developer hadn’t applied for full planning permission.
