Police issue update after pedestrian killed in three-vehicle M6 horror crash

A man has tragically died after being hit by a vehicle on the M6, following a crash involving two lorries and an Audi. Police closed a stretch of the M6 near Wigan on Sunday afternoon (January 12) following a collision.

Emergency services were called out to the M6 northbound at Hunger Hill, between junctions 27 for Standish and 28 for Leyland, shortly after 3pm. Lancashire Police says it received reports of a collision involving a pedestrian, an Audi A8 and two Scania HGVs.

The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers, Lancashire Police says.

Enquiries are ongoing and witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage, are being urged to come forward. Sergeant Laura Kendall, of Lancashire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A man has very sadly lost his life following this collision, and first and foremost, our thoughts are with his loved ones at this very upsetting time.

“The motorway was closed for quite a significant amount of time, and I would like to thank those who waited patiently as our officers carried out their enquiries. We know the motorway network will have been busy at that time, so if you witnessed the incident, or if you have dashcam footage between J27 and J28, between 2:45pm and 3:05pm, please do get in touch with us.”

Details can be passed on to Lancashire Police by calling 101, quoting log 0638 of January 12, 2025, or by emailing the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on SCIU@lancashire.police.uk
