Police have issued a warning after several crashes happened across Merseyside following ice. Today is the sixth day in a row the region has been hit with a weather warning.

The yellow weather warning for snow and ice comes after days of traffic chaos, school closures and rail cancellations as a result of the disruptive weather. The latest warning for Merseyside began at 12.15am on Thursday, January 9 and is in place until 11am.

Merseyside Police said there were several crashes across the region due to ice on the roads. Photos shared by the force from one of the crashes showed a Land Rover flipped on its side. Police confirmed there were no serious injuries.

It appeared to have crashed into railings at a crossing and involved a silver car which had heavy damage to the bonnet. Officers urged drivers to take extra care when travelling and provided tips for driving in snowy and icy conditions. These are:

  • Accelerate gently when moving off
  • Instead of using the brake, cycle down gears to use engine braking
  • Leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front, especially if you can see the vehicle ahead has snow or ice on the roof
  • Try to use a higher gear and avoid braking as much as you can
  • Ensure you remove snow and ice of the top of your vehicle as well as windscreens and headlights
  • Wear warmer clothing and take time to make sure all windows are de-iced
  • Expect delays, stick to main routes and allow extra time for your journey.

Merseyrail activated its cold weather plan this morning, meaning the first trains of the day ran without customers. The train operator said this was to “ensure lines are clear and safe for use.” There are also delays on the M62 and M6 due to snow and ice.
