‘Posh’ Gloucestershire chippy makes top 50 list of country’s best

A fish and chip shop in Gloucestershire has been named among the country’s best. Malt and Anchor, Cirencester, was featured on the list of the top 50 chippies in the country in the Fry Awards.

It’s only a few months that the chippy, which opened back in 2017, made the top 10 list for the Restaurant of the Year in The National Fish & Chip Awards. It is renowned for its ‘posh’ take on the humble cod and chips.

Also making the list was Bredon Village Fish and Chip Shop, Bredon, Worcestershire. While Fiddlers Elbow, Leintwardine, Herefordshire, is also in the top 50.

This is the 13th year of the awards, and Fry Magazine says that the “pass mark was 96% and above” – adding that several gained the full 100%. Reece Head, competition organiser, said: “Congratulations to this year’s award winners! Another year has passed and, once again, these shops have shown resilience, adapting to today’s challenges with remarkable dedication.

“At a time when inflationary pressures are being felt, these businesses continue to stay positive and prioritise their customers, maintain exceptional standards, and find innovative ways to keep fish and chips affordable.

“Starting the year as award winners is a fantastic way for fish and chip shops to kick off 2025, setting the tone for a successful year ahead. Whether served in a restaurant, a takeaway, or from a mobile unit, the Fry Awards prove that quality fish and chips can be enjoyed anywhere.” The full list of the top 50 is here.

The Malt and Anchor in Cirencester

On its website, the Malt and Anchor, which is in Castle Street, says: “Located in Cirencester, we serve only the freshest produce to the highest standards in a unique and relaxing dining environment. A traditional “chippy” menu with a twist, our speciality fish and chips, panko coated calamari, locally sourced award-winning pies, butcher sausages and Malt & Anchor’s own fresh fish specials ensure that there is something for everyone.

“In addition to great food we also serve an array of fine wines, cocktails and boutique beers, thoughtfully picked to compliment our menu. Available to enjoy in the restaurant, or to take away in the comfort of your own home!”

Last year, we visited Bredon Village Fish and Chip shop for a review. We loved it and said its a 10 out of 10 chippy, you can read how much we loved it here.
