Post Office issues warning to UK households ‘in 100 postcodes’

The Post Office has sounded the alarm to households across 100 UK postcodes as it prepares to axe more than 100 branches nationwide. This decision will significantly affect numerous UK households, including those in Yorkshire.

According to Post Office banking director Ross Borkett, “Our figures demonstrate that millions of people clearly still rely on cash to manage their budget on a day-to-day basis.”

Borkett also mentioned that substantial cash withdrawals were made daily leading up to Christmas, showing how essential it is for people to access exact amounts of cash at branches. He added, “It’s testament to the hard work of postmasters and their staff that over a billion pounds was withdrawn over the counter in a single month.”

Nigel Railton, Post Office chairman, shared the news at the company’s headquarters in London during an address to postmasters, retail partners, and staff, reports Birmingham Live.

“We know that where cash is withdrawn locally it tends to be spent locally, demonstrating the vital role postmasters play in keeping local high streets going,” Mr Borkett remarked. Meanwhile, Campaign for Cash director Martin Quinn highlighted the severity of the situation: “This is another nail in the coffin for communities who rely on the Post Office network for access to cash services. The Government must immediately demand that this closure programme be stopped, and treat the Post Office network as national infrastructure.”
