Prince William takes on new role as he heads to Birmingham for important event

Prince William has taken on a new role – and will arrive in the Midlands today for a special meeting. The Prince of Wales has officially become Patron of the College of Paramedics.

He will head to Birmingham today for its inaugural Emergency and Critical Care Conference. The prince has always had a strong affiliation with emergency responders, especially through his roles as an Air Ambulance and RAF Search and Rescue pilot.

He has strong links with the Armed Forces and spent three years at RAF Valley in Anglesey, Wales. Today, Prince William is set to meet senior leaders of the College, along with guest speakers and paramedics in Birmingham.

He will attend two sessions at the conference focused on trauma critical care and the techniques used during search and rescue helicopter missions, Express reports. The College of Paramedics was established in 2001 and is a membership organisation open to all UK paramedics registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

It is also open to student paramedics and those who have an interest in the paramedic profession and healthcare delivery. There are more than 20,000 members.

It has been instrumental in advocating for professional standards, learning and development, and mental health and wellbeing. In February 2024, the College was granted the Royal Charter of Incorporation by King Charles.

Chief Executive of the College of Paramedics Tracy Nicholls said at the time: “I am delighted we have been able to achieve this on behalf of our members, and to strengthen the College for the future. Gaining the Royal Charter is the first step towards being granted the title ‘Royal’ but our journey to increase leadership and development across our profession has a solid foundation for future chartered titles and more scope for development of paramedics.”
