Real reason Meghan Markle still 'needs Prince Harry' in 'professional split'

There has been a notable shift in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship in recent months.

The couple, once seemingly inseparable, appear to have undergone a professional split, which has seen them undertake a number of separate engagements and projects.

Most recently, Meghan returned to Instagram – six years after deleting her accounts and lifestyle blog The Tig. And she has made it clear it is her own personal account, rather than one shared with Harry, choosing the simple handle @meghan. Furthermore, she appeared alone in the first post she shared with the public, in a video showing her on a beach to celebrate the New Year.

According to an expert, there is a clear strategy behind Harry and Meghan’s ‘split’ – but the Duchess is still very much reliant on her husband.

Prince Harry ‘regretted’ bombshell Megxit statement for heartbreaking reason

Royal author Hugo Vickers conceded that Meghan doesn’t really need Harry to remain in the public eye, telling the Sun: “We certainly know who Meghan is. If you ask anybody what the name Meghan meant, we know. We’ve got it in one.”

He further likened her to the late Queen, noting that everyone knew who ‘the Queen’ was – in much the same way Meghan’s name is instantly recognisable.

But, he noted, there is a crucial difference between the late monarch and the Duchess. “The reason that we know that, of course, is not because of her career as an actress in Suits and other things – it’s because she married Prince Harry.”

Referring to Meghan’s new Instagram, Hugo continued: “Now she can do exactly what she likes. The interesting question is: is she, as Meghan, able to go her own path?

“Does she still need the Prince Harry connection? And I suspect the answer is that she does. I’ve often wondered whether she has a habit of dumping people. I’m not suggesting she’s going to – but let’s say she did dump Prince Harry. What would the world think? I think that would be probably treated in a rather negative sort of way. So I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.”

Prince Harry to return to UK within days but without Meghan Markle

The Sussexes have been photographed separately on various recent occasions, including on December 5, when Harry attended the 2024 New York Times DealBook Summit, while Meghan remained in California to attend the Paley Honors Fall Gala alongside Tyler Perry .

Fans have been left confused by the once inseparable couple’s distance, and there were even rumours of a brewing divorce. However, Harry put these claims to bed at last month’s summit, telling NYT columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin: “Apparently, we’ve bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So it’s just like, what?” He added: “It’s hard to keep up with, but that’s why you just sort of ignore it”.

Sources have revealed that these separate appearances ensure that one of them always stays behind for their children, with one friend telling People : “What we are seeing is a functional and healthy relationship with two working partners, not the contrary.”

Meghan Markle suffers major setback as Instagram is forced to apologise

Another source told the magazine that this tactic is also part of the couple’s “twin-track approach”, whereby Harry focuses on charity endeavours and Meghan on her entrepreneurial projects and business.

PR expert Mark Borkowski, meanwhile, told The Telegraph that Harry and Meghan’s “separation of work” has been going on for some time now, especially as Meghan builds her new American Riviera Orchard brand. According to Mark, this is because the “star power” they believed they would have had as a couple after stepping down as senior working members of the Royal Family “didn’t work”.

Mark explained: “They had to change the narrative. They need a venture that deflects from the failures. The charity aspect impresses upon everybody that he [Harry] does have value beyond the controversial stuff. It has the effect of separating them from the bad press and the failed content ideas. The punters still have time for Harry.”
