The festive season is known for its high spirits and merry-making, but it also brings with it a higher risk of household mishaps.
From spilled drinks to food crumbs, our homes endure quite a bit during the Christmas period. If you’re battling with wine stains on your carpet, there’s good news, as a cleaning expert has shared a quick method to eliminate those stubborn marks.
A simple household item is all you need, and the results are impressive. The tip was recently posted on TikTok by user jeeves_ny, who even let red wine sit on a white carpet overnight to demonstrate the effectiveness of his technique.
He allowed the stain to “dry out” before tackling it the next day. His solution involves mixing one part white vinegar with three parts water. You’ll also require a hot iron and some towels for the subsequent steps.

He instructed: “Start by pouring your mixture over the stain, and then put a towel on top of it. Iron until you see colour transferring.”
He explained that the heat from the iron helps to draw the liquid up into the towel, and away from the carpet. Persistence is key, as he mentioned needing about six towels to completely remove the stain.
He first eliminates most of the stain and then treats any remaining discolouration with hydrogen peroxide – a solution he calls “colour-safe” bleach. Once dried the carpet looks in tip-top condition.
The carpet cleaning secret has garnered over 19,000 views online. Once shared, viewers hastily took to comment on the technique.
One said: “Thank you. This really worked.” Another inquired: “Does this destroy the towels, or can they be washed? Excellent technique either way.”
Despite its popularity, there were skeptics who suggested alternate methods for wine stain removal; however, experts confirm there are pluses to this specific solution. Vinegar, experts say, is particularly effective in combating rust stains or blemishes on clothing and surfaces.
Applying vinegar followed by ironing with a damp cloth leverages the acidic characteristics of vinegar to tackle rust. When it comes to wine spills, vinegar’s ability to neutralise tannins coupled with the heat from the iron draws the stain out into the towel. It’s advisable to handle fresh stains promptly, and to always conduct a test patch to avoid damage to delicate fabrics.
You can purchase white vinegar from most supermarkets, including for 35p at Aldi and Tesco.
