Roads shut LIVE in Yorkshire with M62 flooding, dangerous sheet ice and landslide on A59

Yorkshire is all set to see heavy snow falling across the region this evening and tomorrow – and has already caused disruption on the roads.

The Met Office has put an amber alert in place, warning of heavy snow and the disruption it could cause. The warning covers all of Yorkshire except the coast, which is covered by a yellow snow and ice warning. See the hourly forecast for today and tomorrow where you live.

As a result of the snow, the Met Office says rural communities may be cut off and there may be power cuts or the loss of some services life mobile phone coverage. In addition, they warn of delays and cancellations to public transport with travel delays on roads, and the possibility of stranded vehicles and passengers.

So far, part of the M62 has been shut for flooding, a landslide has shut the A59 and a moorland road has been closed after sheet ice made it impassible. See the blog below for fuller details.

The Met Office said: “Snow will reach the south of the warning area later Saturday, then spread north across the rest of the area through Sunday morning. Snow will be persistent and heavy at times, and will likely drift in brisk easterly winds, especially over higher ground.

“Much of the warning area can expect 3-7 cm of snow. Areas above about 150 m will likely see 15-30 cm, with 40 cm for ground above 300 m, before snow begins to ease and clear by the end of Sunday. For some lower-lying areas, such as the Vale of York, snow may mix with rain at times making estimations of snow depths here more difficult. Regardless, travel will likely be difficult, with power line icing an additional impact.”

With disruption expected, it is important to know which areas are most seriously impacted. You can keep an eye on this blog to stay up-to-date on road closures below.
