Sadiq Khan has said he is “truly humbled” after he was made a knight in the King’s New Year Honours list.
In a statement posted on X the London Mayor said: “Truly humbled to have received a knighthood in the King’s New Year’s Honours.
“I couldn’t have dreamed when growing up on a council estate in South London that I’d one day be Mayor of London.
“It’s the honour of my life to serve the city I love.”
The Tooting-born son of a bus driver worked as a human rights lawyer before entering Parliament as MP for his home town in 2005, serving as a junior minister under Gordon Brown and then as shadow justice secretary under Ed Miliband.
The knighthood comes after Sir Sadiq secured a record third term as Mayor of London earlier this year.
In response to the news, chair of the London Assembly, Andrew Boff AM, said: “The London Assembly congratulates the Mayor on his becoming a Knight of the Order of the British Empire, which recognises his service as a Councillor, an MP, and as Mayor of our great city since 2016.
“The Assembly welcomes this honour as a broader recognition of the importance and value of our regional democratic structures and hopes the Mayor uses the status granted by this Honour to further advocate for Londoners with partners in the UK and overseas.”
