Sainsbury’s shoppers without Nectar cards warned of losing out on £624 every year

Sainsbury’s customers have been hit with a stark warning that they face losing £624 each year if they are not using a Nectar card. The shopping-savvy folks at Which? have revealed that Sainsbury’s regulars might be paying over the odds when compared to the more wallet-friendly Aldi.

After tracking grocery prices every day throughout 2024, Which? crowned Aldi as the cheapest supermarket for the whole year. Lidl was in second place, while Waitrose consistently ranked as the most expensive.

The consumer watchdog pointed out: “Waitrose was the most expensive for our bigger shop every month except September, when Sainsbury’s was priciest (for shoppers not using a Nectar card).”, reports the Mirror.

It went on to say: “Our price comparison includes discounts that are available to everyone and loyalty prices where applicable, but not multibuys.”

Come December, Aldi led the pack with an average bill of £100.29 for a selection of 56 branded and own-label products. Those with a Nectar card at Sainsbury’s paid up £112.13, but without the card, the total hit £116 that’s a £12 difference for each weekly shop, or a hefty £624 over the course of a year.

Harry Rose, editor of Which? magazine, said: “Our research shows Aldi has retained its crown as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in 2024. After the added expense of the festive period, many households will be looking to cut costs. Our analysis shows that by switching supermarkets, shoppers can make significant savings, highlighting the advantages of shopping around where possible.”

Meanwhile, Tesco has been named the most affordable of the traditional supermarkets for those with a Clubcard, with a total bill of £111.22, while non-Clubcard holders would see a slightly higher figure of £112.90. In stark contrast, a shop at Waitrose could set customers back £129.83 nearly £30 more than an equivalent basket at Aldi.
