An urgent recall alert has been issued for packets of sausage rolls due to concerns they may provoke severe food allergies.
A mislabelling error led to cheese and onion rolls being packaged as Farmfoods 50 Cocktail Sausage Rolls, omitting the presence of cheese from the label. As a result, individuals allergic or intolerant to milk may face a health risk.
According to Allergy UK, around 2-3% of children suffer from cow’s milk allergies, the most prevalent cause of food allergy in the developed world’s pediatric population. Moreover, a 2011 study revealed that cow’s milk allergies account for 10-19% of food-induced anaphylaxis cases in both child and mixed-age populations.
David Wood Baking Ltd’s recall affects 700g packages of Farmfoods 50 Cocktail Sausage Rolls bearing the batch code L4295 and a best-before date of October 2025. Customers who purchased the product are advised to return it to the store of purchase for a full refund.
The Food Standards Agency stated: “David Wood Baking Ltd is recalling Farmfoods 50 Cocktail Sausage Rolls because the pack contains cheese and onion rolls which contain milk, which is not mentioned on the label”, reports the Express.
“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.”
Symptoms of a milk allergy can range from wheezing, vomiting, hives to digestive problems. In severe cases, it can lead to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Some individuals are also allergic to milk from sheep, goats, buffalo and other mammals. While most children outgrow milk allergy, those who don’t may need to continue avoiding milk products.
