Schoolboys arrested over Smethwick taxi driver ‘carjacking’ attempt near park

Two schoolboys have been arrested by police in connection with a carjacking attempt in a Black Country street. The incident took place in West View Road in Smethwick, next to West Smethwick Park, on Thursday (January 16).

A taxi driver was pushed and has his keys snatched at around 8pm. Two suspects attempted to start the taxi.

But they were unable to start the car and fled the scene with the keys to the cab. Officers from West Midlands Police attended the scene and detained a 14 and 15-year-old boy on suspicion of robbery.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “Two teenagers have been arrested after an attempted carjacking in Smethwick. At around 8pm on Thursday night (January 16) a taxi driver was pushed and his car keys were stolen on West Park Road.

“The suspects attempted to start the taxi but were unsuccessful and fled the scene with the car keys. Officers responded and quickly arrested two teenagers aged 14 and 15 on suspicion of robbery.
