Second arrest made after man, 38, killed in New Year’s Day knife attack

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender in connection with a fatal stabbing on New Year’s Day. Officers and paramedics attended Sussex Street, in Rochdale, at around 2.30am last Wednesday (January 1).

Greater Manchester Police said it was called out to reports of a disturbance in the street. On arrival at the scene, emergency services found a 38-year-old man who had suffered a severe knife wound, on nearby Essex Street.

Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A man in his 30s was identified as the suspect and arrested.

He was rushed to hospital from the scene with serious injuries. The Manchester Evening News understands the suspect remains in hospital and is yet to be questioned.

GMP says a woman in her 30s was later arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. She has since been bailed.

Detectives believe the incident to be ‘an isolated and targeted attack’, and they are not searching for another suspect. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to come forward.

Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Jones, of GMP, previously said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who can assist with our investigation as we know the smallest bit of detail will help us piece together the moments that led to this tragic loss of life. That includes anyone who may have access to or footage from video doorbells, dashcams, CCTV or mobile phones that could have captured the incident or the moments before or after it.”

Information can be passed on to GMP by calling 101, quoting incident number 715 of January 1, 2025. Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
