Severe New Year’s Eve weather forecast: Live updates as Wales’ gears up for celebrations

A combination of heavy rain, strong winds and some snow all feature in the UK forecast for the New Year period. A series of severe warnings – including an amber warning for rain in Scotland – are currently in place.

There is a 24-hour warning for rain in place for parts of Wales between 6pm today (New Year’s Eve) until 6pm on New Year’s Day. Parts of north Wales are expected to see the heaviest rain.

Met Office chief meteorologist, Steve Willington, explained: “A series of low-pressure systems will track across the UK over the next couple of days bringing some potentially disruptive weather.”

The Met Office forecast for Wales today says: “A dry start with some bright intervals, mostly in the east. Rain moving steadily southwards throughout the day, heavy and persistent at times. Windy for all with gales possible in coastal and upland areas. Mild. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

“Rain becomes slow moving overnight, remaining persistent in the north with drier intervals possible further south. Very windy throughout with continuing gales. Still mild.
